The Marc Fitch Fund is an educational charity established by Marc Fitch (1908-1994) in 1956. It is governed by a Council of Management who are the charity’s trustees.

What is funded

The Marc Fitch Fund offers awards to individuals and organisations for research and publication in the fields of archaeology, historical geography, history of art and architecture, heraldry and genealogy, surnames, catalogues of and use of archives, conservation of artefacts, and other antiquarian, archaeological or historical studies. The Fund's focus is on the regional and local history of the British Isles.

What is not funded

Grants are not awarded for foreign travel or for research outside the United Kingdom unless the circumstances are very exceptional.

Awards are not made to students in connection with vocational or educational courses of any kind; assistance cannot be given to those reading for higher degrees.

Awards are not made for building works or for mounting exhibitions; the Fund does not contribute to appeals.

How to apply

Publication and Research

Publication awards are made towards the cost of book production; research awards are intended to help with an author’s own incidental research expenses. Prospective applicants should submit a brief outline of their project, preferably by e-mail. If the proposal meets the Fund’s criteria, the relevant application forms - which must be used - will be provided. Unsolicited applications will NOT be accepted.

Special Projects

From time to time the Fund may consider applications for special projects where a piece of work does not fit easily into one of the above categories. As with research and publication, a prospective applicant should submit a brief outline of the project, preferably by e-mail. Application forms are not required for special projects but guidelines for drafting the application will be provided by the Fund if the project meets the Fund’s criteria. These guidelines must be followed. Unsolicited applications will NOT be accepted.

When to apply

The Council of Management meets twice a year to consider applications, in spring and autumn. The deadlines for receipt of completed applications and references are 1 March and 1 August.

General information

Awards made in 2007/8 totalled £108,646.
